Where Should We Go for Photos?
It's the question I get most from clients, no matter what kind of session we're planning. And here's the honest answer: Seattle is incredible for photography, but you have to plan for the weather. Not around it -- for it. Because some of the best photos I've ever taken in this city happened on gray, overcast days when the light was soft and even, the colors popped, and nobody was squinting into the sun.
I've organized this guide into three sections so you can plan realistically. Outdoor spots for those golden clear days. Indoor and covered locations for when it's raining (which, statistically, it will be). And spots that look great no matter what the sky is doing. Whether you're booking a portrait session, maternity photos, couples portraits, or brand photography, there's a spot on this list that works for you.
Outdoor Spots (When the Sun Shows Up)
Seattle's sunny days are worth planning around. When you get a clear afternoon with good light, these locations deliver shots that are hard to beat anywhere in the country. Book these with a flexible weather policy and a backup plan -- that's just smart Seattle shooting.
Golden Gardens Park
If I had to pick one outdoor location in Seattle that works for almost every session type, this is it. The beach gives you sand, driftwood, and water. The bluff above gives you meadow grass and trees. And the views of the Olympic Mountains across Puget Sound are genuinely breathtaking at sunset.
Best for: Couples, engagement, family, maternity, portraits
Best time: Golden hour -- about an hour before sunset. Summer evenings here are magic.
Tip: The parking lot fills up fast on summer weekends. Aim for a weekday evening or arrive early. This one really does need decent weather -- rain here means wind off the water, which is tough on everyone.
Kerry Park
Kerry Park gives you the postcard view of Seattle: the Space Needle, the downtown skyline, Elliott Bay, and on a clear day, Mount Rainier looming behind it all. For that classic Seattle shot, nothing beats it -- but the magic only happens when the mountain is out.
Best for: Couples, engagement, portraits -- especially if you want the skyline in your photos
Best time: Sunset or blue hour on a clear day. "The mountain is out" is a real Seattle event and worth scheduling around.
Tip: This park is tiny and popular. For more breathing room, walk a block east to Marshall Park -- similar views, fewer people.
Magnolia Bluff / Ursula Judkins Viewpoint
One of my favorite hidden gems. The viewpoint along Magnolia Boulevard gives you unobstructed views of Puget Sound and the Olympics without the crowds. The light at sunset facing west is extraordinary -- on a clear day, it's otherworldly.
Best for: Maternity, couples, engagement, intimate portraits
Best time: Sunset facing west. Parking is easy and free along Magnolia Blvd W.
Gas Works Park
The old gasification plant structures give you a rugged, industrial backdrop, while the kite hill offers a panorama of the Seattle skyline reflected in Lake Union. It's moody and dramatic -- and actually works on overcast days too, since the industrial structures look great under gray skies. A solid crossover pick.
Best for: Portraits, couples, brand photography, creative sessions
Best time: Golden hour for the skyline, but overcast works here too.
Green Lake
Seattle's living room. Casual, warm, and full of life -- which makes it a natural fit for family sessions where you want photos that feel relaxed and real. Autumn is especially beautiful when the trees turn gold and red.
Best for: Family sessions, casual couples, kids, lifestyle portraits
Best time: Late afternoon or golden hour. The east side of the lake tends to be less crowded.
Indoor & Covered Spots (Rain-Proof)
Let's be real -- Seattle gets around 150 rainy days a year. That's not a reason to cancel your session. These locations are completely protected from rain and produce beautiful results. In some cases, the moody indoor light is actually more interesting than anything you'd find outside.
Pioneer Square
Pioneer Square is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in Seattle, and it gets better in the rain. The covered walkways, brick architecture, and iron pergola give you natural shelter while the wet cobblestones reflect the warm street lights. It's genuinely moody and atmospheric -- exactly the kind of light that makes portraits look cinematic.
Best for: Couples, creative portraits, brand photography, anyone who wants an urban editorial feel
Best time: Late afternoon or evening when the ambient and artificial light balance out. Rainy days add dimension here, not problems.
Seattle Central Library
The Central Library is a genuine architectural landmark -- all geometric glass, dramatic angles, and natural light that pours in from every direction. The interior levels are open and visually striking, with a red escalator corridor that photographs like nothing else in the city. This is a working public library, so we keep things low-key, but the space is open to the public and regularly used for photography.
Best for: Brand photography, creative portraits, anyone who wants a modern architectural backdrop
Best time: Weekday mornings are quietest. The diffused natural light inside is flattering at almost any hour.
The Fairmont Olympic Hotel Lobby
Warm, grand, and full of classic elegance. The lobby of the Fairmont Olympic has that old-world feel -- chandeliers, marble, rich wood tones -- that photographs beautifully for a refined, timeless look. I recommend reaching out ahead of time and scheduling during quieter hours. The management is generally welcoming for guests and professional photography.
Best for: Couples, engagement, maternity, brand sessions with a polished aesthetic
Best time: Weekday mornings before the lobby gets busy.
Pike Place Market (Covered Sections)
The market is famous as a tourist spot, but the covered sections are a genuinely great photography location year-round. The neon signs, flower stalls, fish market, and covered arcade walkways all stay dry -- and honestly, the rain keeps the casual crowds thinner while the serious vendors are still there doing their thing. It's authentically Seattle, and photos here have a vibrant, lived-in energy.
Best for: Brand photography, creative portraits, couples who want an urban lifestyle feel
Best time: Early morning before 9 AM for the quietest experience, or rainy afternoons when tourists thin out but the market stays busy. If you're doing brand work, we can layer in nearby coffee shops and storefronts.
Loft Studios & Studio Spaces
For fully controlled sessions -- especially headshots, newborns, or brand work where lighting precision matters -- I have access to studio spaces in the Seattle area. Studio sessions give us complete control over light, background, and environment. No weather dependency, no parking stress, no strangers wandering through the frame.
Best for: Headshots, newborns, product and brand photography, any session where a clean controlled look is the goal
Tip: Ask me about studio availability when you reach out. It's a great option to have in your back pocket, especially for winter bookings.
Spots That Work Rain or Shine
These locations are the workhorses -- they're beautiful in sunshine, but they're equally good (sometimes better) when it's overcast or drizzling. Soft, diffused cloud light eliminates harsh shadows and is genuinely flattering for portraits. These are my go-to recommendations when we're booking and don't want to gamble on the forecast.
Washington Park Arboretum
The Arboretum is gorgeous in every season and almost every weather condition. The forest canopy provides natural overhead cover that keeps light soft regardless of the sky. Spring brings cherry blossoms and azaleas. Autumn lights up with oranges and reds. Even a rainy day here is beautiful -- water droplets on leaves, rich saturated greens, moody filtered light through the trees. The paths wind through gardens, over stone bridges, and past reflecting pools.
Best for: Maternity, portraits, couples, family, engagement
Best time: Morning or late afternoon. Spring (April-May) and autumn (October) are peak seasons for color, but this location holds up all year.
Tip: Weekday mornings are quietest. Parking along Lake Washington Blvd is free but limited; the main Arboretum lot has more space.
Discovery Park Forest Trails
Everyone knows Discovery Park for the lighthouse and the bluffs -- and those are stunning on a clear day. But the forest trail system is the real secret weapon. The tree canopy keeps you reasonably dry and eliminates harsh overhead light entirely. Overcast light filtering through old-growth trees is some of the most flattering portrait light I've ever worked with. When it's raining lightly, the forest floor gets that deep, rich green that looks incredible on camera.
Best for: Families, maternity, couples, portraits -- especially if you want a moody, lush Pacific Northwest feel
Best time: Any time. The forest genuinely looks good in all conditions. The south parking lot gets you closest to the bluffs if you want to combine looks.
Georgetown and SODO Murals
The colorful street murals throughout Georgetown and SODO work beautifully on overcast days -- no harsh shadows competing with the art, just clean even light and saturated color. This is one of the few locations where midday cloud cover is actually ideal. The vibe is creative, edgy, and full of personality.
Best for: Creative portraits, brand photography, musicians, artists, anyone who wants something with attitude
Best time: Overcast days are honestly ideal. Weekends are quieter in this industrial area.
Under the Freeway Park Overpasses
Fully covered, completely dry, and genuinely striking. The concrete overpass structures near Freeway Park and around the edges of Capitol Hill and First Hill give you an urban, architectural backdrop with natural overhead shelter. The scale is dramatic, the light is soft and even, and nobody else is using it for photos. It's an underrated spot for clients who want something edgy and different without getting wet.
Best for: Creative portraits, brand photography, couples who want an urban editorial look
Best time: Any time -- that's the whole point.
Seward Park
Seward Park sits on a peninsula in Lake Washington and contains one of the last old-growth forests in Seattle. The towering trees, fern-covered ground, and filtered light create a serene, almost mystical atmosphere. The canopy keeps light soft and even throughout the day, which makes this one of the most forgiving locations in the city for timing and weather. The paved loop trail is also stroller-friendly, which makes it a practical win for family sessions.
Best for: Family sessions, maternity, portraits, couples who love nature
Best time: Morning or late afternoon. Parking is free and usually available.
On Rain and Overcast Light
I want to say this directly: overcast days are not the enemy. They're actually some of the best shooting conditions you'll find. When clouds diffuse the sun, you get soft, even, wraparound light with no harsh shadows and no squinting. Colors get richer and more saturated. Skin tones look smooth. The Pacific Northwest's signature moody atmosphere -- the thing that makes this place feel cinematic -- comes through most clearly on exactly these days.
Some of my favorite portraits I've taken in Seattle happened on gray days at the Arboretum or on a drizzly morning at Pioneer Square. Rain is part of life here. We shoot through it, and the photos are often better for it.
How I Help You Choose
Every session starts with a conversation about what you're looking for -- the vibe, who's in the photos, what you'll do with the images, and what the weather looks like that week. From there, I'll recommend one or two spots that fit your vision and your forecast. I always have a backup location ready so we're not scrambling if conditions shift.
Sometimes the best location isn't on this list at all. It's your favorite coffee shop, the park where your kids play every weekend, or your own backyard. The most meaningful photos happen in places that feel like you.
