My Favorite Photo Spots on the Eastside -- For Every Kind of Day
I get this question all the time from clients on the Eastside: "Where should we go for our session?" It's one of my favorite questions -- and one I always answer with a follow-up: "What's the weather looking like?"
Because here's the thing about the Eastside: we live in the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful, lush, green -- and rainy for a solid chunk of the year. And while I'll always prefer a clear golden-hour evening at the lake, rainy and overcast days are actually a gift for portrait photography. The cloud cover acts like a giant natural softbox, eliminating harsh shadows and creating soft, even, flattering light. Some of my favorite work has been shot on classic Seattle gray days.
The trick is knowing which spots to choose. So instead of just listing my favorite locations, I've organized them by weather so you can plan your session with confidence -- whether you're booking for July or November.
Whether you're planning an engagement shoot, a family session, maternity portraits, or brand photos, here's how I think about it.
Outdoor Spots -- Best on Clear Days
These locations are at their best when the sun cooperates. Book these for late spring through early fall, or sneak in a weekday session during one of our surprising October clear spells.
Bellevue Downtown Park
Right in the heart of downtown Bellevue, this park is gorgeous. The circular canal, wide open lawns, and clean modern landscaping give you a polished backdrop without feeling stuffy. I love it for couples and portraits because the lines are so clean -- the photos end up looking effortlessly elegant.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, portraits, brand photography
Best time: Late afternoon into golden hour. The park faces west, so evening light is stunning. Spring through early fall.
Tip: Start at the canal fountain and work across the lawn as the light shifts. Weekday evenings are much quieter than weekends.
Meydenbauer Bay Park
This renovated waterfront park in downtown Bellevue is one of the Eastside's newer gems. You get water views, the Bellevue skyline as a backdrop, and a modern design that photographs beautifully. The dock and shoreline areas are especially great for couples.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, small family sessions
Best time: Golden hour -- the west-facing waterfront catches incredible sunset light. Summer evenings are magical here.
Tip: This park gets busy on warm weekends. Aim for a weekday session or arrive early in the golden hour window for more space.
Kirkland Waterfront
Downtown Kirkland has a relaxed, charming energy that comes through in photos. The marina, public art, little beaches, and views across Lake Washington add up to a backdrop that feels warm and lived-in. I especially love it for sessions where couples want to grab a coffee, stroll the waterfront, and let things feel like a date rather than a photoshoot.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, brand lifestyle photos, casual portraits
Best time: Late afternoon into evening. The waterfront faces west, so sunset light is gorgeous. Summer for the full Kirkland vibe.
Tip: Marina Park and Marsh Park are my favorite starting points. Walk the waterfront path between them for a variety of looks without getting in a car.
Juanita Bay Park, Kirkland
Juanita Bay photographs beautifully any time you go, but golden hour here is something else. The boardwalks over the wetlands, the soft water reflections, and distant mountain views create a layered, dreamy backdrop I keep coming back to.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, maternity, individual portraits
Best time: The hour before sunset. The boardwalks face west, so light hits the water and makes everything glow. Year-round, but summer and early fall are most comfortable.
Tip: Start on the boardwalk for reflections and water views, then move to the grassy areas near the parking lot -- one location, two completely different vibes.
Luther Burbank Park, Mercer Island
Luther Burbank is the Eastside's best-kept secret for photos. The long dock stretching into Lake Washington is one of my all-time favorite spots -- the symmetry, the water, the light all come together perfectly. The park also has wooded paths, meadows, and a rocky shoreline for plenty of variety.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, family sessions, maternity
Best time: Golden hour on the dock. Spring and summer for the lushest greenery; fall foliage around the park is gorgeous too.
Tip: Walk past the main dock to the north shoreline for a quieter stretch with beautiful natural light filtering through the trees. Some of my favorite candid moments have happened there.
Woodinville Wine Country
For couples who want something more romantic and grown-up, Woodinville's wineries and vineyards are hard to beat. The rustic architecture, rows of vines, and barrel rooms create a warm, intimate feel perfect for date-night-style sessions.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, anniversary photos, brand sessions for food and beverage businesses
Best time: Late afternoon in summer or early fall when the vines are full and green -- or starting to turn gold.
Tip: Always check with the winery ahead of time about photography policies. I've shot at several Woodinville locations and know which ones are photographer-friendly -- happy to help you navigate this.
Indoor & Covered Spots -- Rain-Proof Sessions
These locations deliver stunning photos regardless of what the sky is doing. Perfect for fall, winter, and spring bookings -- or anytime you want to take weather out of the equation entirely.
Bellevue Arts Museum
BAM is one of the most underused portrait locations on the Eastside. The modern architecture, soaring interior spaces, and carefully designed light make it a genuinely exceptional backdrop. Clean lines, interesting geometry, and a gallery atmosphere that reads elegant without trying too hard.
Best for: Brand sessions, individual portraits, couples, editorial-style shoots
Best time: Weekday morning hours before it gets busy
Tip: Great for personal brand photography -- the museum backdrop signals creativity and culture without feeling like a generic office headshot.
The Woodmark Hotel, Kirkland
Lakefront luxury right on Lake Washington. The Woodmark has elegant interiors, beautiful natural light from the water-facing windows, and a sophisticated atmosphere that elevates any session. The lobby, lounge, and waterfront terrace all photograph beautifully.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, anniversary photos, upscale portraits
Best time: Any time -- it's an all-weather location by design
Tip: Even on rainy days, the waterfront views through the windows create a moody, cinematic backdrop. Coordinate with the hotel ahead of time for the smoothest experience.
Willows Lodge, Woodinville
Rustic-luxury in the heart of wine country. Willows Lodge has incredible warmth -- exposed wood, stone fireplaces, lush landscaping, and that cozy Pacific Northwest character that photographs beautifully in any season. It's especially magical for couples sessions with a romantic, intimate feel.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, anniversary, elopement prep
Best time: Year-round -- the interior spaces shine in fall and winter especially
Tip: The lodge grounds and gardens give you beautiful exterior options too if there's a break in the rain. Best of both worlds.
Bellevue Square / Lincoln Square
Modern architecture, clean backgrounds, and interesting geometric lines make this a surprisingly versatile session location -- especially for brand photography and lifestyle content. The newer Lincoln Square spaces in particular have a polished, contemporary feel that works well on camera.
Best for: Brand sessions, personal branding, editorial portraits, fashion-forward content
Best time: Early morning before the crowds, or late evening when the lighting shifts
Tip: Think beyond the typical mall setting -- focus on architectural details, clean walls, and the interplay of light and space. The results often surprise clients.
Your Favorite Coffee Shop or Restaurant
Seriously -- don't underestimate this one. A lifestyle session at a cafe, restaurant, or local spot you actually love tells a real story about who you are. For brand photography especially, this context is powerful. You're not just a headshot, you're a person with a life and a personality.
Best for: Brand and personal brand sessions, lifestyle portraits, creative entrepreneurs, small business owners
Best time: Off-peak hours for more space and privacy -- mid-morning on a weekday is usually ideal
Tip: Choose somewhere with good natural light from windows and a visual style that matches your brand. I'll scout it with you beforehand if you'd like.
Spots That Work Rain or Shine
These outdoor locations have enough natural cover -- tree canopy, structures, or sheltered areas -- that light rain isn't a dealbreaker. And honestly? Overcast light at these spots often produces the most beautiful, dimensional portraits.
Bellevue Botanical Garden
The Botanical Garden is magical in any season, and the tree canopy throughout the grounds provides natural cover that softens rain and diffuses light beautifully. The perennial borders, dahlia garden, and the serene Yao Garden (Japanese section) give you layered, lush backdrops all year long.
Best for: Family sessions, maternity portraits, bridal portraits, couples
Best time: Morning light is soft and even thanks to the tree cover. Late spring and summer for color; fall foliage is stunning.
Tip: On overcast days, the flat light in the garden is genuinely perfect for portraits -- no squinting, no harsh shadows. I love shooting here when it's gray.
Luther Burbank Park Covered Dock, Mercer Island
The covered dock area at Luther Burbank gives you that lakefront magic with actual shelter overhead. Even in light rain, you can work the dock and shoreline without getting soaked, and the water views are just as beautiful on a moody gray day as they are at sunset.
Best for: Couples, engagement sessions, family sessions, maternity
Best time: Year-round -- the sheltered area makes this a genuinely all-weather option
Tip: Gray skies over Lake Washington create a soft, reflective quality that's actually stunning for portraits. Bring a light jacket and lean into the mood.
Marymoor Park, Redmond
Marymoor's massive 640 acres include covered picnic shelters that make it a solid choice even when it's spitting rain. The wide open fields are perfect for families who want to run around and just be themselves, and the covered areas give you a fallback when needed.
Best for: Family sessions (especially with young kids), casual couple shoots, dog-friendly sessions
Best time: Late afternoon when the fields glow in warm light. Spring wildflowers and fall color add beautiful seasonal touches.
Tip: Park near the Meadow or Willows area for the best open field backgrounds. On overcast days, the even light across those fields is excellent for group shots.
A Note on Rainy Day Sessions
I want to say this directly: if it's overcast or lightly raining on your session day, please don't panic. Overcast light is actually flattering, even, and beautiful for portraits. It's one of the things photographers actually love about the Pacific Northwest. We have entire seasons of what I call "natural softbox" light -- no harsh shadows, no squinting, no blown-out highlights. Just clean, dimensional, gorgeous portraits.
With the right location choice and a little flexibility, a rainy Eastside day can produce some of the most stunning work. I've shot weddings, engagement sessions, and family portraits in the rain and produced images my clients absolutely treasure.
The weather is never a reason to cancel -- it's just a reason to choose the right spot.
