So You Booked a Session -- Now What?
Feeling a mix of excited and nervous? Totally normal. Most of my clients feel that way before their first session, and almost all of them tell me afterward that it was way more fun than they expected. Here's what the whole process looks like from start to finish.
Before Your Session
The Consultation
After you reach out, we'll set up a quick consultation (in person, by phone, or over email -- whatever works best for you). This is where we'll talk about:
- What type of session you're looking for (portrait, family, engagement, maternity, brand)
- Your vision and style preferences
- Location options around Seattle and the Eastside
- Timing and scheduling
- Outfit ideas and what to bring
I genuinely love this part. It's where I get to know you a little, so when we actually shoot, it already feels comfortable instead of awkward.
Preparing for the Day
Once we've locked in your date, location, and time, I'll send you a prep guide with specific tips for your session type. A few universal tips:
- Get a good night's sleep: It makes a bigger difference than you'd think
- Eat before you come: Low blood sugar equals low energy
- Wear something that makes you feel great: Confidence shows in photos
- Arrive 5-10 minutes early: So we can ease into the session without rushing
- Leave the self-criticism at home: I'm going to make you look incredible, I promise
During Your Session
How Long Does It Take?
Most individual portrait sessions run about 60 minutes. Family and engagement sessions are typically 60-90 minutes. Brand sessions can run 90 minutes to 2 hours depending on how many setups and locations we're covering.
I always build in buffer time so we never feel rushed. If we're getting great light and great energy, we keep going.
My Approach
I'm a mix of lifestyle and lightly directed. That means I'll give you guidance on where to stand, where to look, and how to move -- but I'm not going to put you into rigid, uncomfortable poses. I want you to look and feel like yourself, just the best version of yourself.
Some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments: the genuine laugh after a posed shot, the natural glance at your partner, the moment you forget the camera is there. I'm always watching for those.
If you feel awkward at first, that's completely normal. Most people loosen up within the first 10 minutes. By the end, you'll probably forget the camera is even there.
What If the Weather Doesn't Cooperate?
This is Seattle -- I plan for weather. Overcast skies actually produce beautiful, even light that's incredibly flattering for portraits. Light rain can add a moody, romantic quality. I always have backup indoor locations in mind.
If conditions are genuinely unworkable (heavy rain, extreme wind), we'll reschedule at no extra cost. Your comfort and safety always come first.
After Your Session
Editing and Delivery Timeline
After our session, I carefully cull and edit your images. My editing style is clean, natural, and timeless -- I enhance the light and color without making things look over-processed or trendy.
Your final gallery is typically delivered within 2-3 weeks through your own private, password-protected online gallery. From there, you can view, download, share, and order prints.
Your Private Gallery
Your gallery is a beautiful, private space just for you. You can share the link and password with family and friends so they can view and download their favorites too. The gallery stays active so you can come back to it anytime.
Prints and Products
Digital files are included with every session, and I also offer print ordering through your gallery if you want professional-quality prints, canvases, or albums. There's something special about holding a printed photo -- screens don't do them justice.
Ready When You Are
First session or fifth, the goal is always the same: you should walk away feeling great about the experience and genuinely excited about your photos. Take a look at my portrait portfolio to see the vibe, and reach out when you're ready. I'd love to work with you.
Love what you see?
Let's create something beautiful together.
