Celebrating This Beautiful Chapter
Pregnancy goes fast. One moment you're seeing those two lines, and the next you're holding your baby. Maternity photos freeze a moment in this incredible journey -- the anticipation, the glow, the connection between you and your partner before everything changes in the most wonderful way.
If maternity photos have been on your mind, here's how I approach these sessions and what to expect.
When to Book Your Maternity Session
The sweet spot for maternity photos is between 28 and 34 weeks. At this stage, your bump is beautifully defined, you're likely still comfortable enough to move around easily, and the risk of early arrival is low.
I recommend booking your session as early as your second trimester. This gives us time to plan the location, discuss styling, and secure your preferred date. Seattle's best outdoor light happens during golden hour, and my calendar fills up -- especially during the summer months.
Indoor vs. Outdoor: Which Is Right for You?
Outdoor Sessions
Seattle offers stunning outdoor backdrops for maternity photos. Some of my favorite locations include:
- Washington Park Arboretum: Lush greenery and dappled light create a dreamy, natural setting
- Golden Gardens: Beach and mountain views for a more open, airy feel
- Discovery Park: Forest paths and meadows with soft, even light
- Bellevue Botanical Garden: Manicured gardens on the Eastside with beautiful variety
Outdoor sessions work best during golden hour (the hour before sunset), when the light is warm and flattering. Seattle summers offer long golden hours -- sometimes lasting until 8:30 or 9 PM.
Indoor Sessions
If you prefer a more intimate, controlled setting -- or if Seattle weather isn't cooperating -- an indoor session is a beautiful option. I work with natural window light in homes and studios, creating soft, glowing portraits that feel timeless.
Indoor sessions are also great if you want to incorporate your nursery, meaningful objects, or a more minimalist aesthetic.
What to Wear
Your outfit should make you feel beautiful and confident. Here are some ideas that photograph especially well:
- Flowing maxi dresses: They drape beautifully over your bump and create gorgeous movement
- Form-fitting dresses: Show off your silhouette and look stunning in profile shots
- Neutral tones: Cream, blush, sage, and earth tones keep the focus on you
- Sheer fabrics or lace: Add texture and elegance without overwhelming the frame
I also love when partners coordinate (not match) -- for example, if you're in a soft blush dress, your partner might wear a cream or light gray shirt.
What to Expect During Your Session
A maternity session with me is relaxed and guided. Here's what the experience looks like:
- Pre-session consultation: We'll chat about your vision, choose a location, and discuss outfits
- Day of the session: We meet at your chosen location (or your home). I'll guide you through natural poses -- nothing stiff or forced. Most sessions last about 60-90 minutes.
- Partner and sibling involvement: If your partner or older children are joining, I'll capture beautiful connection moments between all of you
- Gallery delivery: Your edited gallery is delivered within 2-3 weeks through your private, password-protected online gallery
Practical Tips
- Eat a good meal before your session -- you'll have more energy and feel better
- Bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots
- Moisturize your belly the morning of for a healthy glow
- Don't worry about feeling awkward -- I'll guide you through every pose
- If you're on the fence about including your partner, do it. You'll treasure those photos.
